This was really interesting, back in the 60's and 70's, a lot of the desert around Quartzsite was used for bombing practice. The residents of the town, being terrified that the bomber would make a mistake, went out in the desert, made this arrow, and spelled out the name of their town with rocks, painted them with silver paint, so they could be seen from the air. Took pictures of all the letters, but only put the Q and the arrow on for you to see, of course the silver paint is long gone, but can you imagine how they must have felt? Me neither!
These letters were HUGE as you can see.Notice the car in the background.
In our journey we found this mine that is still being worked today, and Bill had to see what he could see, of course, no-one else was brave enough to get that close!I do love that mans sense of adventure!
Then we came to the town of Bouse, which was known as Camp Bouse in WW2, how interesting that the tank training was so far back in the desert, but we saw pictures of the camp, and the people who were here. The last fella to be alive lives here and he is 97 and going strong.
Whoo~ee, this was an enormous tank, Bill wanted to get up on top, but the signs were quite plain, "Stay Off", so the next best thing was to let him sit in another rig...........................................
He thought this was pretty cool and sure wished his Grandsons could have been here to sit with him! It took him a while to figure out how everything worked, but he and Bob finally did it!
Now in the town of Bouse,(sounds like house) they have Elephants, and somewhere in there is an Alligator as well,
And bunnies.............................................
And Scouts, thought Bill was gona hyperventilate over this, it was really cool looking, but wasn't for sale! I told him if he bought it, no more 351 engines, we are old now and just need to putter~~~~ YA RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The community center is the life blood of the town. They have a gas station, a restaurant (that closes when the weather gets to hot) and of course a bar & a little church.
Once a week there are several fellas that hitch up the wagons, and if you are at the Community Center, will take you for a ride in the desert, how cool is that?

As we ventured on, we came to this town, and just as it says below it, that IS the town, it stays open all summer though, even when the temp. gets to 115*, YUKKO!
This is the local landscaping, it was kinda cool. The "tree" on the right is really a cactus skeleton!
Here is the water supply,we wondered if they used hot water all the time in the summer, how would you keep it cool??? Beats me?
This is one of our journeys in a nutshell,it was really a whole day trip, but want to get as many of our adventures on as I can, and not bore you to death. We had the time of our lives! Hang on, the next adventure is on its way!
Smiles, Prayers and hugs, Arlette & Bill too, and the Sassy
