There are BIG boats ever ware and a TON of people just wanderin' around, soooo we headed out to the country, and there we found what they call slave cabins. They are made of what is called 'Tabby' A mixture of sand, water & sea shells, it is quite pretty. But what they were used for wasn't so good. They were small, some had only holes in the walls for air, some had fireplaces for cooking inside, but we were told that most cooking was done outside because of the heat.
This was the first cabin we saw, it was larger, which meant it was probably the overseers. Below is a picture looking from a boat dock to the main house of the plantation. The Kingsley Plantation. He was said to abhor slavery, yet he had slaves, and his wife was a Haitian. She saw to a lot of the slaves and kept the books. He was for a 3 tier society, lower slaves, next free blacks, then plantation owners, but they were hit with so much opposition, he moved back to Haiti with his family and started a plantation back there.
Remember the tabby buildings i talked about before? Here is why they used shells, there were millions of them, I don't think I have ever been near water that had so many of them.
We were waking around and saw a sign that said "Gofer turtles, please don't disturb them" A bit further Bill started laughing and said 'I can't believe it, they put a fake turtle here so you would think it was real", Hu~uh, says I, that is real, so we stood and looked at him and it got the best of us both, so Bill threw a little pebble at him, and shore nuf, he was very alive!!
We went inside of what use to be the kitchen, and on the display was what was called a Churkha Roller Gin. It made getting the seeds out of the long stands of cotton a little easier, for a person to do it was quite tedious, and this method was fast and didn't hurt your fingers!
This was the warehouse where they kept bales of cotton before shipping. It was very large, and was also made of the tabby.
OOPS, another gofer tortoise, and this guy didn't wait for us to find out if he was alive, he took one look at us and flipped his body around and started down his hole. Did you know that a tortoise can really move that body when he has to? Me neither! So much for the tortoise and the hare story!
STOP,STOP", I was sure he would run away, but he didn't, he just kept right on digging as if there wasn't a soul around, this is the very first armadillo I have ever seen live, and they are fuuny lookin'. looks like he has on a suit of armour, and this nails are very long, but he has the cutest little face and the tiniest little ears, he is almost cute. We stood and watched him for about 5 min., and he finally wandered off into the woods, diggin' all the way.
This is a sign about the first Black Beach, it was on Amelia island and was established by an African American life insurance man, one the the first black millionaires. His dream was to have a resort beach that all black folks could come and enjoy cause they weren't allowed on any other beach.
This is the tallest sand dune in Florida, not so impressive here, but very much so in person, and all the sand was snow white!!
This was such a pretty little church that I wanted to put it on!
Thought this was pretty, and if you notice, it is up on stilts, so many places on this beach are, as are many other places I've shown you.
Now.........to be quite honest with you, I have absolutely NO ideas what this house is, but it was so amazing that I wanted to share it with you folks, I loved the porches, the stairs, everything about it. It is now a bed and breakfast, and if we didn't live in Whody, would love to stay here for a week~end!!
Well, I'm sorry to say there were so many more pictures I wanted to share, but each one takes a good 5 minutes, so only put on these few, sorry. Don't give up on me, I will just keep sloggin' along til I can get it right! For now, Love,Hugs & Prayers, Arlette & Bill too and the upset Sassy, NO DOGS ALLOWED!!!!!
