Hi! Sorry I didn't get to you last night, but the park we were in had very low reception, and could hardly get my e~mail.So...... Where do I start! We spent most of the day yesterday in the petrified forest, What wonder there is there! I was so shocked at the whole thing, guess I thought you would see upright trees, like a forest, not so, they were laying down in pieces like somebody chopped them! But were they ever beautiful, WOW!!!! Huge pieces of petrified wood that shone like crystals with the colors of he rainbow. I will attempt to put on a few pictures, but nothing could ever describe how absolutely stunning this was. We stopped a t place where the Indians once had a village, It .was a bunch of small rooms built around a plaza, on the side of a hill where there were huge rocks overlooking a valley, can't you just see all these little kids climbing all over the rocks and Moms telling them to be careful? It was quite a sight, very unlike any dwellings I've ever seen. Bill and I roamed around there quite a while, and came upon some Petroglyph, a fancy word for ancient drawings on the walls & on the rocks, really cool, we saw the painted desert, Puerco pueblo, that was the village, Blue Mesa, and the Crystal Bridge among other things. The Crystal Bridge was amazing, it was a HUGE log that had fallen and through the years the wind had blown all the dirt away from under it and it became a bridge, later on they shored it up with concrete blocks, although they are sure that it will fall one of these days because it is already showing the signs, the unique thing about it was that it had crystallized into all the colors of the rainbow. Bill and I were like little kids and wanted to walk across it, remember those days anyone?, but that was a no,no, phooey! We walked and walked until we were so tired, and the wind, Holy Moley, a couple of times I thought it was gona blow ME off the path, and I'm not a little lady, so that tells you it was really blowing! It was one of the best days we have had except for the blasted wind here! Now I know why Arizona people look so old, they get a regular sand-blasting! Just kidding!!
Next we went into the Museum at Holbrook, and what a delightful time, It is house in the old court house, and has most of the furnishings in the court part, lotz of stuff pertaining to Holbrook and what a lawless town it was, one of the wildest in Arizona. We also got to look into the jail, it was shipped in from an old ship, and it was very creepy inside. Me being a sissy, just went in the entrance, Bill went in all the way , and came out grimacing, saying "this is a good reason to stay on the right side of the law! It had 4 very small cells, and one larger room for a little recreation, NO THANKS!!!! After that we stopped at a local cafe called Joe & Aggies, had a great dinner, and the folks there were more than willing to share a little about their town, it was great fun. Being full up to our eyebrows we headed home to relax. Started Whody so she would be ready to leave at 6-6:30am, hooked up the car buttoned most everything down, and headed for bed. !! Whody was just purring along,no problems what so ever except we couldn't find a rest area, (don't these people ever relieve themselves, )I'm thinking, finally Bill says "we need to stop and get fuel" OKEE DOKEE says me, No stations anywhere near where we are, so we drove to a little town near Gallup , pulled into a Texaco, $4.39 a gallon, don't think so, decided we didn't need it that bad, so hungry and needing fuel we went on our way, came to the town of Gallup, sounds like hoss country, we stopped, fueled up for only $4.18per gallon , pulled out headed for anywhere with food, our thoughts not on much else, Bill goes right through a red light(toilet paper moment) a cop , sitting at the light he went through, turns on his lights, pulls us over, gulp, Bill gets out and the cop says, "do you know you went through a red light?, yes sir, didn't see it in time to stop ,I'm praying like crazy, then the cop says, you have a door open sir, next time be a little more careful. WHEW, we are on our way! Hearts pounding like crazy. Cool, alright, life is good so on we go. We came to a truck stop with a restaurant, good, get to eat, get out of Whody, get our days ration of Sandblasting, eat, head out again, just steamin' along and all of a sudden a big wind hits us sideways, and Whoosh, Whody is walkin' sideways, NOT likin' HER ration of sandblasting, and thank goodness Bill was alert, and nothing bad happened, but you can see why my introduction was of the tissue issue now. We got to our campground around 4pm New Mexico time, and sorta wished we had made reservations somewhere else, but to late, it's free, and people are friendly, so plan on staying for at least 3 days, Clean Whody out, do the laundry, etc, etc, and if we can stand the wind, we have reservations for 5days, if not 3 it is! I know I have sort of rambled today, sorry, just trying to catch up with the last 2 days, and I will try to put pictures on of the Petrified forest! Love to all, your crazy couple, Arlette & Bill, too,and the Sassy!
